The anime genre wheel picks a category at random, which is the practical way through a backlog that has grown past the point where you can choose from it.

Twelve slices covering the genres most watchlists are built from, plus two practical ones: something from the backlog, and a film instead of a series.

Anime backlogs have a particular failure mode. They grow faster than they shrink, because adding a title costs nothing and starting one costs twelve hours. Eventually the list is long enough that opening it produces nothing but a vague guilt, and you rewatch something familiar instead.

Fixing the genre first cuts the list to a handful, and choosing from a handful is a decision rather than a task. The film slice exists for the same reason — a two-hour commitment is far easier to accept on a weeknight than a twenty-four-episode one.

Replace the genres with the actual titles sitting on your list if you want a harder commitment. A wheel that lands directly on a specific series removes the last place indecision can hide.
