Random Team and Pair Generator

PickerSpin's team generator is a free random team picker that splits a list of names into near-equal-sized groups or pairs in one step, using a Fisher-Yates shuffle driven by the browser's Web Crypto API so every possible arrangement is equally likely. It randomises who is in which group; it does not balance groups by skill or any other attribute.

Create random teams and pairs instantly. Enter names, choose how many teams you need or how many people belong in each group, and generate a random split with near-equal group sizes. The split is random, not skill-balanced.

How to Use

  1. Enter player or participant names
  2. Set the number of teams
  3. Click generate for random balanced teams

Good For

  • Sports team drafts
  • Classroom group projects
  • Office team-building activities
  • Game night team splits

To pair everyone up rather than split them into groups, set the group size to 2 and see how to randomly pair people up. For why a shuffle beats captains picking sides, see how to pick random teams that are actually fair.

How to split a group into random teams

  1. Paste your names - Enter or paste every participant, one name per line or comma-separated.
  2. Choose how to split them - Pick a number of teams, or switch to group-size mode and set how many people belong in each group. Set the size to 2 to generate random pairs.
  3. Generate the teams - Click Generate. The list is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates shuffle and dealt evenly across the groups, so team sizes differ by at most one person.
  4. Reshuffle if you need a different split - Generate again for a completely fresh random arrangement - each run is independent of the last.

Random Team and Pair Generator - questions

How does the random team generator work?

Paste or type names, choose how many groups (or how many people per group), then click Generate. The tool shuffles names using a cryptographically secure algorithm and distributes them evenly across teams.

Is the team assignment truly random?

Yes. We use the Web Crypto API for a Fisher-Yates shuffle - the gold standard for unbiased randomization. Every possible team arrangement has equal probability.

Can I create pairs instead of teams?

Yes. Switch to "By group size" mode and set the size to 2. The generator will pair everyone up randomly. If there's an odd number, the last group will have 3 people.

Is there a limit to how many names I can add?

No hard limit in the tool. We've tested it with 500+ names without issues. For best readability, keep it under 200.

Is the team generator free and signup-free?

Yes. It is completely free with no account, no ads and no limits, so a teacher or coach can open it and split a group in under five seconds.
