Why random beats hands up

The same four students volunteer for everything. It is not that the rest have nothing to say — they have just learned that someone else will answer first. A wheel changes the maths: everyone is equally likely, every time, so quiet students get pulled in without being singled out by you.

It also takes you out of the decision. When the wheel picks, nobody is being targeted, and the class can see that. That matters most in the lessons where being called on feels risky.

Setting it up with a real roster

The template loads twelve placeholder names — Alex, Jordan, Taylor and so on. Swap them for your own list once and the wheel is yours: edit any entry directly, or paste a whole class in at once. A 30-name wheel spins just as fast as a 12-name one.

Two habits make it stick. Keep absent students off the wheel for the day so a spin never lands on an empty desk. And decide in advance whether a name comes off after being picked — removing it guarantees everyone goes once before anyone goes twice, while leaving it in keeps every spin a genuine surprise.
